The week in Tanzania was exactly what I needed to recharge and prepare for my next Fellowship placement in Thailand, from where I write now. As I unpack and settle into my new apartment, I feel pretty tired from the long trip here—or that could just be the Bangkok weather talking. Anyone care for 1000ºF with 200% humidity? Indeed, Bangkok has been named the hottest capital city in the world. Quite the change from The Hague!
I haven’t been here in 10 years and much has changed, but Bangkok so far seems like the teeming and lively city of my memories. Hundreds of food vendors line the streets, every alleyway is a market, photographs of the king adorn the shop fronts and traffic intersections, and where you least expect it, a gleaming gold and red temple peeks out from between office buildings.
I have a couple of days to settle in and get acclimated before starting work at Mahidol University. I am really excited to finally be here though and am looking forward to finally sinking my teeth into my substantive and interesting work.
