Feeling blue

Well, the overnight political reveral in the US has pushed this blog into uncharted territory: commenting on US politics. I won't bore people with my opinion and predictions, mainly because they would be semi-articulate and largely uninformed. Actually that probably puts me on par with most people blogging on this subject...
Just to clarify my position though, I generally don't adhere to strict partisanship because I find that the polarization of American politics undermines mature political dialogue and progress. However, if pressed to define myself, I'm a Democratically-leaning moderate, who happens to be pretty thrilled about the current blue-ing of America.

Anyway, a couple of things about the current elections stand out for me:

-We have our first woman Speaker of the House. This is exciting mainly because Pelosi is now 3rd in line for the Presidency, just in case you-know-what happens (oh shush you're all thinking it).

-Massaschusetts has it's first black governor, Deval Patrick, who happens to be only the second black governor in US history.

-The first Muslim congressman ever elected: Keith Ellison of Minnesota

- NY had a series of historic Democratic victories, including taking back the governorship. I have a lot of respect for Eliot Spitzer and welcome him to a tough job. Not quite sure what to think of Andrew Cuomo. His father was a great politician (and one of the best public speakers in US history) so he has some big shoes to fill.

- Continuing with NY, I'm encouraged by Hilary's landslide win, including her victories in traditionally Repulican districts of the state.

- Ohio and Florida are looking blue, which is promising for 2008.

-Unfortunately, as always, women and racial minorities are still seriously underrepresented in the American political scene. I guess I'll have the French presidential elections to look forward to...

...Anyway I'm holding my breath for MT and VA, as I head home under the misty evening rain. Just remember, this isn't a victory, it's an opportunity.
